Octane
8 MIDI in. 8 MIDI out. Your setup, anywhere. All the TRS MIDI for your portable studio, in one compact, rugged box. Less adapters, no ground loops, no compromises. Designed for musicians who dare to take their music gear wherever the music happens.
Compact setups are unique: pocket synths, drum machines and portable controllers mostly speak MIDI over 3.5mm jacks and often run on batteries. Hook up more than two, and it's adapters, splitters and cable spaghetti. Octane gives you eight TRS MIDI inputs and eight outputs plus USB-C MIDI in a tidy, sleek package — about the size of a smartphone.
Octane is a straightforward MIDI hub, and it's fully open hardware. No need to reverse engineer: we provide the schematics and the firmware sources. Everything is distributed under permissive licenses, so you are encouraged to study, modify and repair the product along its lifetime.
Rust OSS firmware
Octane is powered by a Raspberry Pi RP2354 MCU running a Rust stack. The firmware is easy to update over USB, so you can adapt it to your own use case — MIDI routing, filtering, event generation... You take the lead.A collaboration
Octane is a collaboration between Fred // Fred's Lab and Oliver // Sourcebox, long term friends involved in both commercial and open-source projects. Together we combine years of experience designing instruments and tools for creatives, to make modern gear that does exactly what one needs and costs what it should. Fred's Lab handles production and after-sales support.Octane will be available in two versions and two colors (black or natural anodized):
• Kit version — enclosure and assembled mainboard, eight screws and one firmware to flash over USB
• Fully assembled version
The first batch is being funded through Kickstarter, starting on 03.11.2026:
